Strategy

Eighteen years and fired!

I heard the story of a man who worked in a company and then he was fired after eighteen years. Yes, he had some reserves in the contributory pension scheme, but he had only an extra month’s salary in-lieu of notice!

Strategy keeps an eye on the future while making the most of today!

A wise man once said, “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones.
Learn from their ways and become wise!  Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work,  they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter” (1).

Ants do not “think” that anything could happen. They prepare for winter. The big question is “how”?

In George Clason’s book The Richest Man in Babylon (2), he gave some necessary steps without which a man may not be able to lay hold on the future. The following four of his suggestions:

1) Increase your capacity to earn: Before GSM technology, retired military personnel who were trained in signals almost always got jobs in the telecoms companies.

2) Insure a future income: It is necessary for every working class person to keep in mind that a day comes when one is no longer able to work. We need to start a stream of income flowing towards us by all means now, while are still working.

3) Make of your dwelling a profitable investment: Imagine that the man who worked for eighteen years had a house of his own, fully paid for. He would be stressed to be out of job, but compare this situation with if he did not have a house of his own and he lost his job. If shelter is settled, there could be peace of mind to think of how to get another source of income to fend for his family.

4) Guard your treasures from loss: If all other steps are taken but no efforts are made to safeguard the initial efforts, then “a building” constructed in twenty years could be destroyed in twenty minutes.

Nobody stumbles on success; nobody suddenly succeeds. Keep your eyes on the future, and make the most of today.

Thanks for reminding us of the need to make hay while the sun shine, the advice on strategy is well taken.
For believers, it is necessary to appreciate that man can only propose, it is our Maker who disposes. So let us back our strategic plans with fervent prayers so that our pans (strategies) can be achieved. So help us, God.
